Presidential Mountains New Hampshire
June 24-27,2006
Presidential hike 6/24-27/06
Saturday, 6/24: The first day we drove to
New Hampshire and stayed at a motel called Hiker's Paradise. Well, it may
have been a paradise for AT hikers who have not seen a building in many months,
because it merely sheltered you from the elements, not the wildlife. There were
many cockroaches, mice, and piles of cigarette ash. Nobody wanted to sleep under
the blankets in bed and only one dared to take a shower. That night, the senior
patrol killed an unidentifiable flying insect six inches long in the motel.
Sunday, 6/25: This morning, we drove to the entrance of the hiking trail. Here
we said a short prayer before hiking. The mountain we hiked was called Galehead.
At the beginning, it was deceptively easy, although hot and mildly humid. In
some parts, there were steep steps. We arrived at Galehead's hut in the early
afternoon. After we rested and enjoyed the view of the valley, some scouts hiked
a peak that was close by called South Twin. This hike was steep for the most
part but in a couple hours we returned to the hut. However, some of the scouts
who came on this additional hike felt the need to to take yet another hike
before dinner and summited Galehead.
Monday, 6/26: Today was very windy and rainy even below the tree line. The hike
was such that all the scouts were wet before they cleared the tree line to be
exposed to a constant 60 mph wind with gusts up to 80 mph. We summited Mt
Garfield and Mt. Lafayette. The scouts were split into two groups. Half of the
front group went back to find the group behind and the rest of the front group
continued toward the hut. That night, all the scouts played Bum and/or
Monopoly. The hut's wind measurer broke and read the last gust of wind as
83 mph. Also, the walls of the hut shook with each gust.
Tuesday, 6/27: The winds had died down considerably and the weather cleared up
progressively. The hike was mostly if not completely downhill and steep. After a
few hours of hiking, we reached the cars and headed home.
