Bear Mountain Backpack Trip

October 4th and 5th, 2008

Itinerary:  Leave Saturday morning at 7:30 am from commuter lot on Rte 77 and drive to Harriman State Park in NY. Our hike will be in the southern portion of the park.  We will park at a parking lot on Route 202 in Montebello, and hike to Pine Meadow Lake where we will set up camp.  Pine Meadow Lake was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during 1933 and 1934. The plan was to build a resort: the resort was never built however the foundations are still in place from that time.

Packing: Use the 3 season gear list on the troop 474 web site.

Special Gear: Bug spray, sun tan lotion, 2 water bottles, sleeping bag (at least 30 degree because it is already getting cold at night), swim suit. (may want to wear swim suit while hiking so you can go swimming when we arrive). If cold nights continue though it may end up being too cold to swim.  Should be home by 4 PM on Sunday.

Food:  Pack a lunch for both Sat and Sun.  Will do dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday by patrol.

Trip is about 5 miles one way and is a moderate backpacking trip.

Contact Jim Slattery or Carolyn Jagielski if interested in attending this trip.  There will be a special meeting for parents on Thurs night at the scout meeting with Barry.  The boys will be reviewing how to pack and what to bring on this type of a trip.
